What is Self-Care for Mothers?

A lot of people have ideas about what self-care is. They think of it as expensive spa treatments, going shopping, or getting a massage.
But while those things can be nice, they’re not the only way to take care of yourself.
Self-care for mothers is anything that helps you physically, emotionally, or mentally recharge. It’s anything that makes you feel happier, healthier, and more like yourself again.
Why is Self-Care Important for Mothers?
I’m sure this is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s worth saying. Self-care is so important for moms.
So often moms tend to put their children and their families first. We run ourselves ragged and then we wonder why we’re so exhausted all the time.
Let’s talk about why self-care is so necessary for moms.
You can’t pour from an empty cup
I’m sure you have heard this reason before but I really want you to let it sink in. You can’t give something to your family that you don’t have.
If you don’t take the time to get enough rest and do activities that reenergize you, you won’t have the energy to chase after your kids and see to their needs.
If you don’t take time to do things that help you feel calm, peaceful, and centered, how do you expect to give those emotions to your family?
You can’t give them what you don’t have. So if you want to give your children and family a calm, patient, happy mom, you need to take the time to create her.
Take time each day, even if it’s just 15 minutes, to do something that helps you feel energized or happy, or calm. That way you can then share those emotions and feelings with your family.
You are a better parent when you feel better
I’m telling you this is the honest truth! You are a better mom when you are happier.
When you feel good, you are more patient, kind, understanding, and helpful. Your strengths as a parent are stronger and you’re better able to improve your weaknesses.
Finding a little bit of time for yourself each day can make a surprising difference. Being able to spend time doing something that helps you feel relaxed and centered is going to be a big advantage when it comes to dealing with parenting challenges.
I know for a fact that the mornings I remember to exercise, even just a quick workout, I feel so much more prepared when my kids wake up. It doesn’t matter what type of self-care you practice, as long as it works for you.
I haven’t met a mom yet that doesn’t want to do her best for her children. Taking some time each day to invest in yourself helps you do and be your best for your family.
Your children need to see an example of a healthy happy woman
The last reason why self-care is important for moms is that you are your children’s example of adulthood. The woman that you are is what your daughters are going to aspire to be and what your sons will be looking for in a future partner.
So what kind of woman do you want your children to see? The one who never has time for herself? The one who is exhausted all of the time and therefore grumpy and moody? One who is irritated at the drop of a hat because she never has a moment to just rest and relax?
Or maybe you want to teach your children what it looks like to balance your own needs with those of the people around you. When you take time for self-care in your own life, you teach by example.
When finding time for self-care gets hard or even makes you feel guilty, I want you to take a minute and imagine how you would want your own daughter to feel when she grows up.
How would you want her to take care of herself? This answer will probably be a good guideline for your own behavior.

Now that we know what self-care is and why it’s so important for moms, let’s talk about the different types of self-care.
Most people think of the traditional bubble bath or getting their hair or nails done, but there is so much more to it than that.
Physical
The first, and most popular, form of self-care is taking care of your body. This includes, but is not limited to, getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising.
When you take care of your body, you are giving yourself the energy and strength you need to get through your day. When you are physically healthy, you are better able to handle stress and other challenges that come your way.
Mental/Emotional
The next type of self-care is taking care of your mental and emotional health. This includes things like relaxation, journaling, and spending time with positive people.
When you take care of your mental and emotional health, you are giving yourself the ability to process your emotions and stay positive in the face of stress. When you are mentally and emotionally healthy, you are better able to deal with the mental load of motherhood.
Social/Community
The next type of self-care is maintaining a sense of social connectedness and community. This includes things like maintaining relationships, friendships, networking, and attending social events.
When you take care of your relationships with others, you are giving yourself the ability to interact with others and feel a sense of belonging. When you have a strong social and community network, it can help boost your mood and offer support on tough days.
Lifestyle
The next type of self-care is doing things that support your overall lifestyle. This includes things like setting goals, routines, and daily schedules.
When this type of self-care comes up, most people think of rigid schedules or losing the ability to be impulsive. But in reality, maintaining some sort of structure in your life allows you to make sure the important goals and responsibilities in your life are taken care of.
Then you can relax and actually enjoy your downtime without always feeling guilty or behind.
Creative
Another important type of self-care is giving yourself time to be creative. This includes things like hobbies, art, music, and any other activity that allows you to express yourself.
Giving yourself time to be creative allows you to tap into your imagination and use it as a form of stress relief. When you are creative, you have an important outlet for a part of yourself that our day-to-day life typically doesn’t offer.
Spiritual
The final type of self-care is taking care of your spiritual health. A lot of people think this strictly applies to religion, but it really means feeling connected to a greater sense of purpose.
This can come from things like meditation, prayer, nature, service to others, or any activity that helps you feel connected to something bigger than yourself.
When you take care of your spiritual health, you are giving yourself the ability to find peace and calm in the midst of chaos. When you have a strong sense of spirituality, you are more resilient when challenges come your way.
Self-Care Ideas for Moms
Now that we know the different types of self-care, let’s talk about some specific ideas for how moms can incorporate self-care into their daily lives.
Remember, self-care is not a one size fits all experience. What works for one mom might not work for another.
The important thing is to find what works for you and make it a priority in your life.
Here are some general ideas to get you started:
- Get enough sleep: Most moms are sleep-deprived. Make it a priority to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. If you can’t get that much, squeeze in as much as you can.
- Eat healthy foods: Eating nutritious foods will help you have more energy and feel better overall.
- Exercise: Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mood.
- Take breaks: Don’t try to do it all at once. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a few minutes to yourself to relax and rejuvenate.
- Find a hobby: Doing something you enjoy will help you feel more balanced and fulfilled.
- Spend time with friends and family: Social interaction is important for maintaining your mental health.
- Seek professional help: If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other mental health issue, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
